The IMS drug & alcohol related deaths (DARD) surveillance system is a complete package to monitor both DARD and wider mortality in treatment, comprising of a dedicated portal for individual areas/regions and oversight/management of the DARD review process including engagement with partners, data quality support for services, liaison with local coroner offices, coordination and chairing of DARD panels and management of the action log to evidence the impact of panel discussions. The system also provides regular intelligence briefings outlining themes and trends from coroner inquests, toxicological findings and panel reviews for individual localities. The model has been developed in partnership with commissioners and service providers ensuring the system is responsive to local needs and captures information relevant to the local landscape. It is currently operational in 25 local authorities across England, allowing for the sharing of relevant information and resources between different areas. IMS collates information on drug related deaths in a way which allows a range of providers to both input and view information using a secure web-based portal, ensuring that access is not restricted due to details being held on systems specific to a particular sector. IMS gives commissioners, public health leads and others automatic notification of deaths as they occur without having to wait for aggregated reports, and the system links into a national network on drug related deaths which provides real time intelligence on DARD around the UK.
